White Shirt Project

Project type

Campaign

Date

2019

Location

London

The white shirt began most importantly as a power garment, serving to maintain & separate the elite by creating a continuation of a predominantly masculine power hierarchy.
The separation is clear now that it has been removed from this symbolic garment into a functioning, everyday item of clothing. Presently, in the contemporary world we feel it functions to gives artists and designers the opportunity to recreate, redefine and reinvent.
As a group who originally researched ‘shape’, we have decided to hone in on this idea of it serving as a blank canvas, ready for individual to repurpose it to show their identity and style – whilst also maintaining the concept of it being a ‘power’ garment; but repurposing the ‘power’ aspect, through a chosen few artistic individuals deciding how the white shirt can be shown to represent them through their influence of its reconstruction and its styling. In this effect we plan to focus on how the white shirt can be sculptured and altered physically to compliment a chosen aesthetic, whilst also looking at body shape, stance, pose and design.
